SA music in the spotlight at Midem
South Africa will be the country of honour at the 2010 edition of the Marché International du Disque et de l'Edition Musicale (Midem), the world's largest music industry fair.
The fair, which has been held annually since 1967, takes place in Cannes, France from 23 to 27 January. It brings together the major players in the international music industry, including musicians, business people, media, and cultural policy makers. In 2009 there were 8 000 participants, 4 000 companies, 80 countries and 450 journalists from 300 media organisations in attendance.
"South Africa has an extremely rich and diverse musical heritage," said Midem director Dominique Leguern. "South Africa also offers the international music industry a unique springboard into the southern African market.
"We are very proud to launch this year's 44th edition of Midem with 'South Africa at Midem 2010, celebrating Africa's Music', and enable all our participants to appreciate the huge scope of talented artists from this culturally diverse and rich country.

Joburg one of world's Most Creative Cities

A host of award-winning Johannesburg advertising agencies have placed the city in a leading position in world creativity rankings. The Cannes Report 2009 placed Joburg in the top 10 of the world's Most Creative Cities last year, based on its innovative advertising industry. Joburg came in ahead of cities such as San Francisco, Amsterdam, Berlin and Buenos Aires. The report highlights official rankings of advertising agencies, regions, countries and cities based on their performance at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, hosted annually in the French coastal city of Cannes. The rankings are based on how many Cannes Lions a city collectively achieves.
London topped the list for the fourth consecutive year, with New York and Sao Paulo again in second and third spots. Joburg, home to one of the most coveted advertising agencies in the world, TBWA Hunt Lascaris Johannesburg, won 17 Cannes Lions in total.
Gavin Heron, the TBWA Hunt Lascaris group managing director, said all the cities that were ranked in the top 20 were an amalgam of different cultures; however, Johannesburg was a magnet for people from all over Africa. "It is also a city that, culturally and historically, has been built on struggle and endeavour, [but] it is solutions oriented. This leads directly to people believing that 'impossible is nothing'," he said.

District 9 nominated in key Oscars indicator
District 9 and science-fiction blockbuster Avatar were among the nominees for the Producers Guild of America Awards' top honour on Tuesday, regarded as a key indicator of likely Oscars contenders.
James Cameron's groundbreaking 3D spectacular, Avatar, which has become the fourth highest grossing film in history since its release last month, was among 10 films nominated for the January 24 awards show. The PGA awards "Producer of the Year" honour is regarded as a gauge of which films may ultimately challenge for the coveted best picture prize at the Oscars, which are held on March 7 this year.

2010 ‘a year of national unity’, says Zuma

President Jacob Zuma says 2010 is the year for South Africans to renew their commitment to national unity. "Together we must make 2010 the year in which we renew our commitment to national unity and nation building," Zuma said in a statement on Thursday.
January 1, 2010, he said would mark the beginning of the most important year in the country's history since 1994, with the Fifa Soccer World Cup the impetus behind nation building and economic recovery. "The year 2010 must be the year in which for the first time, we all communicate positive messages about our country to the world – the successes and possibilities."

"We have to put the culture of negativity behind us."

Travellers with a conscience recommend SA
South Africa has been recommended to global travellers as one of the most ethical countries in the developing world. The Developing World’s 10 Best Ethical Destinations are chosen by Ethical Traveler, a project of the California based non-profit Earth Island Institute. The organisation released a report based on a study of developing countries from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. The report focuses on those countries that are working hard to protect human rights, build social welfare, and preserve the environment. South Africa made the list along with African countries Namibia, Ghana and the Seychelles. Ethical Traveler said “We believe this bodes well for the future of these nations and, hopefully, for the African continent.” While crime and the big rich/poor gap in South Africa were mentioned in the report as areas of concern, the country received high marks for supporting eco-friendly, community-based tourism ventures, and for sustainable coastal development and environmental management.
South Africa was also ranked second, behind Lithuania, for Freedom of the Press in the ‘Human Rights’ category.
